The Friends of the Numismatic Museum Association was founded at the end of 1991, with the aim of the moral and financial support, and the enrichment of the Museum. It is led by a nine-member Board of Directors that is elected every three years.

The activities of the Association comprise lectures mainly focusing on coinage and numismatics, as well as visits and excursions to various archaeological sites, museums and exhibitions of special interest.

Nevertheless, the most ambitious goal of the Association is to organize numismatic conferences in collaboration with Universities, Ephorates of Antiquities and Institutes, so as to strengthen relevant research in Greece. Five international meetings have been held so far at Athens (1996), Thessaloniki (1998), Volos (2001), Kos (2003) and Mytilene (2006).
The proceedings of these conferences, like most lectures, are published in the Obolos series.

The Friends of the Numismatic Museum and the Archaeological Institute of Aegean Studies were awarded by the Institute de France, Academie des Inscription et Belles Lettres for the publication of the Proceedings of the Kos symposium on The Coinage in the Dodecanese and the Asian Minor Perea .

The Association is a member of the board of the Hellenic Federation of Associations of Friends of Museums (EOSFIM).

The Secretariat of the Association operates at Ilion Melathron, Wednesday, 10: 00-12: 00. Tel: 210-3643774.
