TIME OF MEMORY AND RECONCILIATION FOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR II
INTERNATIONAL DAYS IN THE COLLECTIONS OF THE NUMIC MUSEUM
The United Nations (UN) has established specific days of the year to commemorate and highlight specific events and themes with the aim of raising awareness and mobilizing the global community. These days are proposed by one or more members and by specialized organizations (UNESCO, UNICEF, FAO, etc.) and are ratified by the UN General Assembly.
In this section of posts, the Numismatic Museum presents coins, medals and other objects from its Collections that are thematically linked to International or World Days.
8th-9th May
HOUR OF MEMORY AND RECONCILIATION FOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES
IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR
By a resolution of the UN General Assembly on 22 November 2004, 8th/9th May was established as a time of remembrance and reconciliation for those who lost their lives during the Second World War. 8th May 1945 is the date on which the German forces unconditionally surrendered to the Allies (Victory in Europe Day). 9th May is celebrated every year by the European Union as a day of peace and unity (Europe Day).
On May 8, 1945, the guns finally fell silent. World War II, which had been started by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi German Reich in 1939, was over. The unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht brought an end to the bloodshed of millions of innocents in Europe.

In the context of the anniversary, we present a bronze commemorative medal, which is exhibited in a display case on the second floor of the Numismatic Museum and was issued in 1985 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) over the Axis powers and the end of World War II.
