Since the 16th century, the creation of major trading powers in Europe and the abundance of precious metals have created the conditions for the issuance and circulation of many large gold and silver coins. The long journey from the coins of the major European states and their colonies continues to the issues of the Monetary Unions and independent countries, passes to nickel and paper coins and reaches the plastic and intangible money of the second half of the 20th century.
