INTERNATIONAL DAY OF DEMOCRACY
INTERNATIONAL DAYS IN THE COLLECTIONS OF THE NUMIC MUSEUM
The United Nations (UN) has established specific days of the year to commemorate and highlight specific events and themes with the aim of raising awareness and mobilizing the global community. These days are proposed by one or more members and by specialized organizations (UNESCO, UNICEF, FAO, etc.) and are ratified by the UN General Assembly.

In the context of the celebration, we present the silver denarius of Brutus associated with the assassination of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March (March 15, 44 BC). According to the historian Cassius Dio (47, 25.3), this type of coin was minted by Brutus to promote the idea that by assassinating Caesar in the Roman Senate he had contributed to the liberation of the State from the dictator and the reestablishment of the Republic (Res Publica). On the reverse it bears the cap of Liberty worn by freed slaves and the two manuals with which Caesar was assassinated.
