The Numismatic Museum and the Embassy of Peru to the Hellenic Republic are jointly organising the exhibition entitled “Treasures of Peru: Minted Commemorative Coins”. The exhibition will take place at the Iliou Melathron, in the “Mando Oeconomides” hall on the first floor, which is dedicated to the late Director of the Numismatic Museum.

The exhibition focuses on three commemorative coin series of one sol, issued by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR) between 2010 and 2020, with the aim of promoting the country’s cultural and ecological heritage.

The coin series “Threatened Wildlife of Peru” consists of ten coins dedicated to animal species at risk of extinction due to illegal hunting and habitat degradation, with the aim of raising public awareness. The majority of these species are protected under Appendix I of the CITES Convention, which restricts the trade in wild fauna and flora to conserve the ecological heritage.

The “Wealth and Pride of Peru” series includes 26 coins featuring representations of emblematic monuments, artefacts, and local traditions, dating from the pre-Columbian period up to modern times. The coins cover a long historical journey, starting from the oldest city in the Americas, Caral-Supe, and reaching the Inca Empire, the colonial era, and the 20th century.

The series “Women in the Process of Peru’s Independence” was issued in view of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the declaration of Independence (1821) and was presented on 30 December 2020. It includes three commemorative coins minted in honour of the women who contributed to the struggle for Peru’s Independence during the 19th century.

Stemming from these three commemorative coin series, the exhibition showcases prominent highlights of Peru’s natural wealth, history, and cultural heritage, reflecting a modern culture with deep historical roots.

The opening will take place on 4 December 2025 at 17:30, and the exhibition will run until 12 January 2026.
