THE INTERNATIONAL DAYS THROUGH THE COLLECTIONS OF THE NUMISMATIC MUSEUM
The United Nations (UN) have designated specific days of the year for commemorating or promoting certain events or topics. The objective is to increase awareness and motivate the international community towards certain issues. These days are proposed by one or more Member States, as well as by specialised agencies (UNESCO, UNICEF, FAO, etc) and are established with a resolution by the UN General Assembly.
In this series of posts, the Numismatic Museum presents coins, medals and other specimens from its Collections that are relevant to the UN International or World Days.

8th-9th of May

TIME OF REMEMBRANCE AND RECONCILIATION FOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES

DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR

By resolution of the 22nd of November 2004, the UN General Assembly declared 8-9 May as a time of remembrance and reconciliation for those who lost their lives during the Second World War. The 8th of May 1945 is the date of the unconditional surrender of the German forces to the Allies (Victory in Europe Day), while on the 9th of May the European Union celebrates peace and unity in Europe (Europe Day).

On May the 8th 1945 the Second World War, which started from the Nazi German Reich of Adolf Hitler in 1993, was brought to an end. With the unconditional surrender of Wehrmacht, the bloodshed of millions of people in Europe was over.

In this context, we present here a bronze commemorative medal which is kept in a display case at the Numismatic Museum’s second floor. The medal was struck in 1985 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the victory of the USSR over the forces of Nazism and Fascism, as well as of the end of the Second World War.
